Bike Rack Competition

The Hammond Downtown Development District (DDD) Design Committee and representatives of Hammond City Administration will host an “Urban Bike Rack” design competition throughout the month of February. The competition will be open to those who live or work in the City of Hammond and to students enrolled in any Tangipahoa Parish high school, college or university.

The entries shall be turned in to the DDD Office (corner of W. Thomas and NW. Railroad Ave.) or emailed to tallo_ca@hammond.org by midnight on February 28, 2018. The entries shall be detailed drawings or graphic renderings with entrant’s name, address and contact information (including student identification number if applicable). An entrant may submit more than one design idea. The entrant’s name will be blinded to the judges until the winning design(s) has (have) been selected.

The designs should not only indicate functionality, but also express creativity in appearance (public art). The judges may select more than one design. The designer of the rack(s) selected will be appropriately recognized.

Design guidelines:

    1. Racks should allow two-point contact with bicycle frame
    2. There should be accommodation to lock frame and one wheel to rack

    3. Consider pedestrian and/or motor vehicular traffic

    4. Consider on-street bicycle corrals as well as sidewalk parking

    5. The rack should be resistant to being cut or removed with simple hand tools

    6. The design will be subject to modification by the judges

    7. The judges will consider maintenance and economy as well as functionality and creativity

    8. The winning design(s) will become the property of Hammond City Administration
