The Hammond Downtown Development District, in partnership with the Tangipahoa Chamber, will host the official grand opening of Railroad Park on Wednesday, June 1st at 5:30PM.
Railroad Park has been a long-standing project of the DDD since 1998. The property has been labeled as Downtown Hammond’s “city center” throughout multiple Master Plan updates. With the renovation now complete, the public space has been transformed to a refreshing, eye-catching park for all to enjoy in the heart of Downtown Hammond.
The grand opening celebration will begin with opening remarks from city leaders and a ribbon cutting ceremony. Engraved bricks recently purchased by community members will be unveiled at the opening. Following the ribbon cutting, Will Vance and the Kinfolk will take the stage until 8PM. Light refreshments will be available on-site. The public is encouraged to bring lawn chairs to enjoy the live music and pay patronage to our local restaurants.
“Railroad Park embodies a fresh approach to public spaces and is a proud example of our community’s collaboration,” says Chelsea Tallo Little, DDD Executive Director. “It is with great excitement this space is finally ready for its debut.”
Designed by Roy Dufreche and Associates, the park now boasts a barrier-free design, including accessible entrances, improved sidewalks, and added protection from the nearby train tracks and vehicular traffic. Park features include three revived oak trees, restored Stewart Monument, performance stage, large-scale outdoor mural titled ‘Hammond Daydream’ by Britt Flood, durable metal HAMMOND letters, clock donated by Hammond Rotary, seating, lighting, and public restrooms.
Future installments in the park include history exhibit plaques, outdoor furnishings including benches, chairs, and tables. Benches purchased in December 2021 are set to be installed in Fall 2022 and will be dedicated at a future ceremony. Community members interested in purchasing a bench or a personalized engraved brick at Railroad Park can visit dddhammond.com/buyabrick.
