Together, we can build a better block!
*At our first Board Meeting, we changed to date of the Better Block event to the week before the BBQ Challange. With the newly installed bike lanes and bike racks, we hope this will encourage people to bike to the event!*
Get involved, we’re building a better block! The Hammond Downtown Development District is focusing efforts to revitalize a strip of South Cypress Street between Morris and Coleman Avenues though a ‘Better Block Demonstration’. So far, the plan includes installing bike lanes and live music but the rest is up to you! The community is encouraged to help bring the block alive on March 20th and enjoy what could be the future of South Cypress on the March 21st.
A ‘Better Block Demonstration’ is a pop-up type event that allows community members to re-imagine the possibility for their downtowns and neighborhoods. Towns that have done Better Block Demonstrations have incorporated interactive murals, pop-up businesses in vacant buildings, temporary parks in un-used green space, temporary bike lanes, beer gardens, live music venues, and the list of creative ideas goes on! Simply put, the Hammond DDD wants to build South Cypress into a better block!
The landscape of South Cypress has three active businesses, three vacant buildings and one large vacant lot of land. One finding of the Hammond DDD 2019 Master Plan Needs Assessment indicated that over 85% of Hammond residents agreed that it is essential or very important to build on vacant or underused land and rehabilitate vacant buildings in Downtown.
All though the event is temporary, the impression of envisioning the future of Hammond is a lasting one and can result in permanent changes that improve the lives of Hammond residents and promote growth for Downtown business owners.
We want to hear your ideas for South Cypress! Join the Hammond DDD for a public input session on Friday January 17, 2020 at 11am in the Hammond City Council Chambers (310 E. Charles St., Hammond, LA 70401). Can’t attend? Drop by the Hammond Farmers Market on Saturday, January 18th or February 15th to support the cause.
*Note: Plans and vision for this is still underway! We'll keep you posted!*
Help us build a better block! Volunteers are needed on Friday, March 20th to help paint bike lanes and set up for the Better Block event on Saturday, March 21th.
